Artist Canal Cheong Jagerroos 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968, China) discusses about her work process, her creative journey in the past 30 years and her cofounded art project ‘Blue and Red’ trip together with Nanna Susi throughout Finland and China for 25000 kms over a period of 2 years. Besides ‘Extract – Blue and Red’, Canal Cheong Jagerroos also shows her installation art project ‘Floating Island’ at Rovaniemi Art Museum.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos is an established Chinese international artist who grew up in an artistic family in Macau. In a fascinating way, the works of Canal Cheong Jagerroos combines the past and present, East and West. For the past 30 years, Cheong Jagerroos has lived and worked in numerous countries, from Asia to Europe and Africa. The unique experiences of culturally diverse places have influenced her artistic work both consciously and subconsciously. - Rovaniemi Art Museum

Canal Cheong Jagerroos (s. 1968). kansainvälisesti menestyneen kiinalais-suomalaisen nykytaiteilijan teoksissa yhdistyvät oivaltava nykytaide ja kiinalaisen taiteen perinne
Macaossa varttuneen Canal Cheong Jagerroosin (s. 1968) teoksissa yhdistyvät nykytaide ja kiinalaisen taiteen perinne. Jagerroos tuntee hyvin sekä itämaisen että länsimaisen taiteen; hän käy luovaa taiteellista vuoropuhelua eri kulttuurien välillä. Jagerroos hyödyntää perinteisiä menetelmiä mutta samalla varmistaa, ettei materiaali aseta rajoja hänen luovuudelleen. Musteella maalatut riisipaperin palat revitään ja kootaan uudeksi uniikiksi kokonaisuudeksi vapautuneesti ja leikitellen. Taideteosten tekeminen on prosessi, joka on täynnä rakentamista ja repimistä – kunnes jäljelle jää valmis lopputuote.- Saimaan Taideluola Art Center

Artist Canal Cheong Jagerroos 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968, China), Founder of ‘Floating Island’ Art Project. “Floating Island is like a vision of my whole life, my artistic journey, my experiences of living and working in many places around the world,” says Cheong Jagerroos, an established Chinese international artist who has lived and worked in Asia, Europe and Africa.
Cheong Jagerroos is well acquainted with the context of both Eastern and Western art, and through her art, engages in a unique dialogue between different cultures. In her works, she rebuilds the language, signs and symbols of traditional Chinese art. The artist gives birth to a vivid, vibrant and layered form by painting multiple layers of colour and mixing different materials, working to ensure that material does not limit her creativity. During her intensive painting sessions, Cheong Jagerroos creates artworks that are emotional colourful expressions that embrace positive energy and dismantle confrontations and differences, creating a peaceful and beautiful utopia. During the project, the two artists travelled extensively in each other’s homelands, soaking up new influences and experiences. 'FLOATING ISLAND' art project is founded by Canal cheong Jagerroos in 2017. In the past thirty years, by living and working all over Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, France, Switzerland, Italy, Africa, Finland, and a number of other countries and areas, Canal Cheong Jagerroos (張 彤 茹) has naturally come across many cultures, these different ways of life have in their own way become a piece of her and her artwork. The unique life experiences have molded her into who she is and reflected deeply in her art as a glimpses from the world can be seen in her work. This is where the name ‘Floating Island’ arises as she imagines herself weaving through the world like a floating island.

Blue and Red Art Project is an ongoing project cofounded by Canal Cheong Jagerroos and Nanna Susi in 2015.
The aim of the project is to foster international creative exchange, deepen understanding across cultures, create ties, building net work between China and Finland, and to encourage tolerance of diverse cultures within the countries. 'Blue and Red Art Project’ is a trip of lifetime Culture Shuttle Project launched by Canal Cheong-Jagerroos (張彤茹) and Nanna Susi in 2015. The project will cooperate and share friendly relations with artists from China and Finland through their artistic and cultural exchanges, with a short documentary film based on Canal's and Nanna’s trips and interviews travelling together deeply in China, Finland and other countries by train/car of 25000 kms. Blue and Red Art Project exhibition will include both artists paintings.

Blue and Red Art Project’ is please to collaborate with Finlayson Art Area (FAA) in a co-exhibition to share, build bridges and push boundaries. Blue and Red Art Project is an ongoing project (2015-2020)
'Blue and Red Art Project’ is a trip of lifetime Culture Shuttle Project launched by Canal Cheong-Jagerroos (張彤茹) and Nanna Susi in 2015. The project will cooperate and share friendly relations with artists from China and Finland through their artistic and cultural exchanges, with a short documentary film based on Canal's and Nanna’s trips and interviews travelling together deeply in China and Finland by train/car of 25000 kms. Blue and Red Art Project exhibition will include both artists paintings. The aim of our project is to foster international creative exchange, deepen understanding across cultures, create ties, building net work between China and Finland, and to encourage tolerance of diverse cultures within the countries.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2017

It was such honored to be invited to join the Beijing Artist In Residence Program 2017 followed by a solo exhibition at Beijing Being 3 Gallery from March 29 to 29, 2017
I have lived and worked for 25 years in numerous countries from Asia to Europe and Africa. The unique experience of having lived in such culturally diverse places, namely; Hong Kong, Shanghai, France, Switzerland, Italy, Senegal and Finland has influenced my work greatly whether consciously or subconsciously. I have discovered that walking the line between the east and west, facing different cultures, can be both constructive and destructive, but always inspirational.
It was an extraordinary experience to have the chance to go back to my home country for the Artist in residence 2017 in Beijing China.
