Artist Canal Cheong Jagerroos 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968, China), Founder of ‘Floating Island’ Art Project. “Floating Island is like a vision of my whole life, my artistic journey, my experiences of living and working in many places around the world,” says Cheong Jagerroos, an established Chinese international artist who has lived and worked in Asia, Europe and Africa. Canal Cheong Jagerroos lives and works in Helsinki, Shanghai, Nice, Berlin and Tokyo.

Artist Canal Cheong Jagerroos 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968, China) discusses about her work process, her creative journey in the past 30 years and her cofounded art project ‘Blue and Red’ trip together with Nanna Susi throughout Finland and China for 25000 kms over a period of 2 years. Besides ‘Extract – Blue and Red’, Canal Cheong Jagerroos also shows her installation art project ‘Floating Island’ at Rovaniemi Art Museum.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos is an established Chinese international artist who grew up in an artistic family in Macau. In a fascinating way, the works of Canal Cheong Jagerroos combines the past and present, East and West. For the past 30 years, Cheong Jagerroos has lived and worked in numerous countries, from Asia to Europe and Africa. The unique experiences of culturally diverse places have influenced her artistic work both consciously and subconsciously. Canal Cheong Jagerroos lives in Helsinki, Shanghai, Nice, Berlin and Tokyo.

BLUE and RED Art Project
In 2015 Canal Cheong Jagerroos and Nanna Susi came up with the idea of launching a joint project. The two artists from widely different cultures would embark on a journey to gain first-hand insights into one another’s worlds. The mission of the BLUE and RED Art Project was to forge ties, foster cross-cultural understanding, and promote collaboration between Finland and China. During the project, the two artists travelled extensively in each other’s homelands, soaking up new influences and experiences. The duo covered thousands of kilometres on their travels, and the impressions of their journeys are captured in their recent work.

BLUE & RED II is a short documentary completed in 2018 about the research trips of visual artist Canal Cheong Jagerroos and Nanna Susi journey to Finnish Lapland, Switzerland and China / Tibet. The intense sounding illuminates the paths taken by the two artists have given rise to their works of art in the Blue and Red. The project exhibitions included both artists artworks at Finlayson Art Area (2017), Basel Art Center (2017), Xian Art Museum (2018), Tangbo Art Museum (2018), Salo Art Museum B&R video (2019), Joensuu Art Museum (2019) and Rovaniemi Art Museum (2020)

Canal has discovered that walking the line between the east and west, facing different cultures, can be both constructive and destructive, but always inspirational.
